Early signs show D’Angelo Russell can gel with Lakers

Corey Robinson looks at D’Angelo Russell’s production since being traded to the Lakers and breaks down why the 26-year-old should continue to mesh nicely with LeBron James, Anthony Davis & Co.

– After his first run in Los Angeles ended poorly after just two seasons, former second overall pick D’Angelo Russell was back in Hollywood for a second stint. The Lakers were in need of an upgrade on the perimeter. And Russell looked good in his February 11 debut. Immediately thrust into the starting lineup, Russell played 35 minutes in the 109 to 103 win at Golden State, finishing with 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field, five rebounds, six assists, and one 3-pointer.

Playing without the injured LeBron James, the Lakers had a pressing need for someone to step up as a playmaker. And Russell got the job done. His presence had a positive impact on Dennis Schroder, who was able to focus more on scoring and finished with 26 points to go along with. Three rebounds, three assists, and three 3-pointers. One result doesn’t make the Lakers a contender, thanks to the hole they dug themselves in before the trade deadline. But the moves made by Rob Pelinka gives them a fighting chance, especially when LeBron and Anthony Davis are healthy.
