College basketball transfer rankings 2023: Texas Tech’s Jaylon Tyson, a former top-40 recruit, enters portal

After a breakout sophomore season at Texas Tech, former four-star prospect Jaylon Tyson became one of the top available talents on the transfer market when he announced Monday that he is entering the portal. At 6-foot-7 and with a multi-faceted game, Tyson has the makings of a two-way, impact player for an NCAA Tournament-caliber team and slots in at No. 9 in the CBS Sports transfer rankings.

In a transfer batch that is heavy on guards and that also features a few premier big men, Tyson stands out because of his versatility as a true wing. The former No. 36 overall prospect from the Class of 2021 played sparingly as a freshman at Texas but thrived after transferring to TTU this past season. He averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds on 53.8% 2-point shooting and 40.2% 3-point shooting. Tyson also racked up 1.4 steals per game and rated as the Red Raiders’ top defender, according to evanmiya.com.

With transfer commitments starting to pile up and amid the relative dearth of proven, high-major wings, he’ll be among the most highly sought players in the portal in the days ahead. Tyson should have two seasons of eligibility remaining, but it would be no surprise if he develops into a legitimate NBA Draft prospect in the season ahead, regardless of where he ends up.

Well over 1,000 Division I players have entered the portal and there are still weeks of player movement ahead before 2023-24 rosters will be even close to settled. Here at CBS Sports, we have distilled the massive number of transfers to a list of the top 40 names to know. This list will grow and player rankings will change as the May 11 deadline for players to enter the portal approaches.
