College basketball transfer portal rankings 2023: Kentucky’s Sahvir Wheeler commits to Washington

When Max Abmas committed to Texas on Thursday night, it gave the Big 12 yet another big-time transfer addition for the 2023-24 season after transfers helped define the league during the 2022-23 campaign. In addition to Abmas, top-10 transfers LJ Cryer (Houston), Kerr Kriisa (West Virginia) and Jesse Edwards (West Virginia) are also headed to the Big 12.

This past season, Kansas State reached the Elite Eight under first-year coach Jerome Tang with a roster comprised almost entirely of transfers, including Keyontae Johnson, who earned a spot on the inaugural CBS Sports All-Transfer team. Other key first-year transfers from the league this past season included Kevin McCullar of Kansas, Sir’Jabari Rice of Texas and Jaren Holmes of Iowa State, each of whom averaged double figures for NCAA Tournament teams.

Abmas has the potential to be just as, if not more important, to the Longhorns next season as any of those players were to their teams this past season. The 6-foot-1 guard played the first four seasons of his career at Oral Roberts, becoming one of the most-prolific 3-point shooters of NCAA history while leading ORU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

With Carr departing after leading the Longhorns in scoring during an Elite Eight run, the door is open for Abmas to immediately take on a starring role for Texas in coach Rodney Terry’s first season as the full-time coach.

Well over 1,000 Division I players have entered the portal and there are still weeks of player movement ahead before 2023-24 rosters will be settled. Here at CBS Sports, we have distilled the massive number of transfers to a list of the top 40 names to know. This list will evolve and player rankings will change as the May 11 deadline for players to enter the portal approaches.
