The Virginia Cavaliers will play under a new head coach this season following the stunning retirement of Tony Bennett, who officially announced his decision at a press conference on Friday. Bennett decided to step down less than three weeks before the season opener against Campbell, despite recently signing a contract extension that would have kept him with the program through the 2029-30 season. He finished with a 364-136 record across 15 seasons, claiming two ACC Tournament titles, six regular-season conference championships and the 2019 national title.
During the press conference, Bennett confirmed that Ron Sanchez will take over as the interim coach this season, but Virginia Athletic Director Carla Williams told reporters after the press conference that the school will conduct a national search for a new head coach. Sanchez returned to Charlottesville last year to take over as an associate head coach, a position he previously held at Virginia under Bennett.
